Relationships are the foundation of any successful business, but to be impactful go the extra mile to prove to your clients that you care. It’s not a difficult thing to do. Go out for coffee, or dinner and get to know them. Listen to their values, goals, and ideas – in the realm of work and home.
I was having lunch with a client one day, and he shared his passion about healthy, organic food. This guy saw food as a way to fuel his body at a cellular level, so he went to great extents to only purchase organic food, which wasn’t convenient or inexpensive.
Now, he didn’t know that I grew up on a farm. For me farm fresh food (what they now call “organic”) was a regular way of life. So, I called my mom and asked her to prepare two chickens for me, as well as a few dozen eggs, and some vegetables from her garden.
I called up my client and asked him to meet.
“I have something for you,” I said.
When he saw me carrying this huge basket with two fresh chickens, farm fresh eggs and produce, he was speechless. Surprised because I listened, and I cared. Listening and caring about clients are two rare qualities in the day-to-day world of business. Talk about shortsighted!
Why wouldn’t you go above and beyond to show your clients you get them? That you care about them? When you do, you earn their loyalty for life. They’ll tell everyone who will listen about what you’ve done for them.
But most importantly, it feels good to do good.
Business is all about relationships, and if you can go the extra mile to give clients something as simple as a few chickens and eggs, this could be a way to win a customer for Life.
