And the Severance Package Goes To...

Job cuts always happen, even with companies making billions of dollars and record profits, lay offs aren’t an unlucky twist of fate. They’re a certainty.

So, when your time comes, will you be ready?

When Your Severance Package Arrives

I’ve interviewed hundreds of people who have received severance packages, and I know that it’s common. I, myself have received a severance package. And the surprising thing is that, for many people, hidden in the severance package is an unexpected gift – the gift of time.

So, although you’ll probably be in shock when you get your severance package, it’s important to remain clear-headed and ensure your gift is appropriate. Is the severance package you’ve received adequate for your years of service and the notice of termination that you’ve been given? Most companies offer generous packages, but if you’re not sure you’re getting what you should contact an employment lawyer to discuss how to negotiate for a better deal.

It’s All About Perspective

Instead of looking at your severance package as unlucky and unfair look at it as an opportunity. Because it is. This is your opportunity to invest in yourself. Whether you want to go back to school, change careers, start your own business, take time to gather perspective on your life, or spend some well-deserved time with your family, this is your opportunity. The chances are low that you’d invest in yourself the way you need to, the way you deserve, while you were still working.

So, when you get your package, allow yourself to go through the range of emotions that are inevitably tied to severance, but don’t wallow in self-pity for too long, or you’ll miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
